“Under the Silver Lake” Film Review & Analysis

Under the Silver Lake (2019) is a neo-noir mystery film from director David Robert Mitchell, whose debut horror flick It Follows became a surprise hit. It stars Andrew Garfield as a young man who stumbles upon what may be a massive conspiracy while investigating the disappearance of his neighbor. The film had a turbulent release schedule, being postponed numerous times and finally dropping unceremoniously nearly a year after it premiered at Cannes. Is it worth the wait, or was there a reason A24 buried it?

Foreign Film Fridays: “Burning” (South Korea, 2018)

Burning (2018) is a South Korean mystery-thriller from Lee Chang-dong, who has been a mainstay of the European film circuit winning awards at the likes of Venice and Cannes Film Festivals. It stars Yoo Ah-in and Steven Yeun (of The Walking Dead fame) in a tale about a young man who falls for a girl that has taken a mysterious rich man as her lover. It has puzzled critics and audiences with its complex themes and ambiguous plot structure. What does the film have to say about life and the human condition?

“Unicorn Store” Film Review

Unicorn Store (2019) is the directorial debut of Brie Larson from a screenplay by Samantha McIntyre. It stars Larson and her Captain Marvel co-star Samuel L. Jackson in a story about a young woman who, unable to adjust to adulthood, decides to adopt a unicorn from a mysterious salesman. The film premiered way back in 2017 before dropping unceremoniously on Netflix this weekend. Is this the beginning of a successful stint behind the camera for Larson, or a misfire?
