“Marriage Story” Film Review: How Good Intentions Can Go Awry

Marriage Story (2019) is the latest film from Noah Baumbach, a long-celebrated indie filmmaker who has yet to break through to Academy success. It stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as a young married couple going through a trial separation, progressively drifting apart on the counsel of their respective attorneys (Alan Alda and Laura Dern). It has been lauded by critics and shot to the top of many people’s predictions for Best Picture this year. Will it be a big player this winter?

Foreign Film Fridays: “Monos” (Colombia, 2019)

Welcome back to my recurring Foreign Films series, where I examine some of the best foreign-language movies of the recent past! Today we have a new release that’s still in theaters: Sundance-favorite Monosfrom Colombian documentarian Alejandro Landes. This war drama follows a group of child soldiers in a guerrilla outfit of a rebel army, tasked with guarding a captured American known only as “Doctora”. Despite 2019 being such a strong year for foreign cinema, Monos has managed to carve out a place for itself and make a case for awards consideration in several categories. What sets this film apart?

“Mary Poppins Returns” Film Review

Mary Poppins Returns (2018) is the long-awaited sequel to the original 1964 film starring the titular character. Emily Blunt takes over the lead role from Julie Andrews, with Lin-Manuel Miranda supporting as another beloved Cockney lamplighter. As the title suggests, the film follows Mary as she comes back to the family she once left when the kids from the first film are all grown up. Is it worthy of its predecessor, and will it have legs going into Oscar season?
