As we wrap up the first half of 2019, I always like to check in on the major awards races and see what the best performances, scripts, directors, and films are of the year so far. While most of the heavy-hitters for these races haven’t even come out yet, if the 92nd Academy Awards were held today, who would walk away victorious?
We’re officially at the halfway point of the year, which means it’s time to check in on the best of 2019 to date! While plenty of awards contenders and heavy-hitters are sure to drop in the fall and winter seasons and replace most of these from my list, what films have impressed me the most thus far?
Under the Silver Lake (2019) is a neo-noir mystery film from director David Robert Mitchell, whose debut horror flick It Follows became a surprise hit. It stars Andrew Garfield as a young man who stumbles upon what may be a massive conspiracy while investigating the disappearance of his neighbor. The film had a turbulent release schedule, being postponed numerous times and finally dropping unceremoniously nearly a year after it premiered at Cannes. Is it worth the wait, or was there a reason A24 buried it?
