1917 (2019) is a World War I survival film from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes. It stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman (among many famous Brits) as two young soldiers tasked with delivering a message across enemy lines to prevent a British battalion from walking into an ambush. It has been heralded as a masterwork of technical achievement, particularly for the way legendary DP Roger Deakins shot it to appear as though it is one take. Is this yet another filmmaking gimmick and the wool being pulled over our eyes, or is this legitimately a Best Picture contender?
